Samsung’s MEMS Shutter To Improve Cell Phone Camera

So why do cell phones with their 5 megapixel cameras take such craptastic photos? Hello, my dedicated 2 megapixel camera from years ago snaps much better pics? Well, the answer lies in the electro-mechanical shutter. Digital cameras have an effective shutter that regulates the amount of light coming in. Cell phones do not due to size and cost constraints.
Samsung is about to finally change that with a tiny 2.2mm diameter circular shutter based on their MEMS (Microelectromechanical systems) technology. Once integrated, this would dramatically improve the quality of cell phone snapshots.
