I don’t know if you’ve heard, but inmates are now using cell phones to commit and orchestrate crimes in and beyond prison walls.  To combat this prison officials from 26 states have signed a bill that has been approved by the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee to allows correction facilities to use technology to block illegal inmate cell phone calls.  The bill has now been passed on to the full Senate and waits approval.

The inherent risk of passing such a bill and in stating such technology is that those in surrounding areas could be inadvertently effected and in the case of an emergency within prison walls, personal would be unable to make a call for help.  But with any bill or measure there is always a balance, and in the case of inmates being prevented from orchestrating a ‘hit’ on someones family it’s probably safe to say it’s well worth the risk.
