According to Gruber from Daring Fireball, “informed sources” report the next gen iPhone will receive a processor boost in the form of a 600MHz processor, up from the current 400MHz CPU. If true, this could noticeably improve the performance of iPhone apps, especially on the gaming front. Other possible improvements include a magnetometer (a digital compass) and a video camera for your video conferencing needs.
Gruber predicts a June iPhone announcement at the Apple WWDC followed by a July release.

Microsoft’s twitter account has two tantalizing tweets that might be of interest to all you Zune fans:
June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers.
@officethemovie: New product launch, that’s all I’m allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre.
Maybe it’ll be the launch of the Zune HD with Xbox game integration? Perhaps, but the phrase that intrigues me is the “hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre”. Why would you want to do that unless you’re waiting for another…mobile phone? Zune HD with phone integration? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Update: Post was a hoax using a fake Twitter account. One can only hope, eh?

Word on the street is that the 3G enabled BlackBerry Onyx aka Driftwood will be coming to T-Mobile this fall. The new, sexier phone will likely feature 3G (rejoice all you T-Mobile users), UMA support, UMTS/HSDPA, 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, optical trackpad (heard good things about this), 480×360 screen, and a carbon fiber-like back cover.
Onyx will supposedly launch as the BlackBerry Curve 9600 this fall for $199 with 2 year contract.

It seems an image of the T-Mobile G1 v2 has been leaked on the net. If the pic is real, it seems to be very iPhone-like but with a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard…and much more sexier than the current G1 to boot. Heck, who needs the G2/Magic/MyWhatever when you can get this sleek device for probably cheaper.

According to reports and leaked documents, Sprint is holding a Palm Pre launch event on June 5 noon. Perhaps this could mean a June 7 retail launch or maybe a less likely June 5 evening launch? Whatever the case may be, it’s best not to dwell on any specific dates. The Palm Pre will launch when it launches.

Rumor has it that Nokia is working on another update to the E71 smartphone. The supposed E71i will feature a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with a QWERTY keyboard and slim form factor. It’s also rumored to have an updated OS, the Nokia S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, which features access point prioritization and increased battery life.
If the rumors prove to be true, it seems Nokia is milking the E71 for all its worth. And I wouldn’t blame them since it’s an all-around solid phone. Maybe in a few years time we’ll be announcing the E71xxii?

Most companies probably cringe at the thought of ‘leaked news’, but if I were Motorola I might be jumping for joy. Why? They need all the press they can get. Today leaked images of two upcoming Android based phones appeared.
First up is the Calgary (pictured above). It sports a slide out QWERTY keyboard that is a mix of touch and chicklet, a touchscreen and some sort of software with a focus on ’social networking’. This phone will be out in Q2.

Next up, is the Motorola Iron Man, which sounds so stupid it probably isnt’ even real. This one sports a slide down QWERTY keyboard and the usual smartphone features one has come to expect. This phone will be out in Q3.
So, yeah, all we really have are some crappy pictures of rumored handsets.

Rumors have been swirling around lately that Verizon is in talks with Apple to bring iPhone-like devices to their network. Some insiders report they’ve seen a more basic version of the iPhone best described as “iPhone-lite”. Another device that may be in the works is a larger tablet-like device that focuses more on multimedia playback. And, of course, neither company wants to confirm anything so take it as you will.
Some analysts are saying, and I tend to agree, that it’s just a move by Apple to get a better deal with AT&T.

With little to no info to confirm said rumor, Sony Ericsson is said to be working on a follow up to the Xperia, the X2. This info was supposedly confirmed by Skyhook’s CEO Ted Morgan, but since they don’t actually make any devices - they provide a location based service - its perhaps a good idea that we file this away under rumor until we hear otherwise.
Worst case scenario, perhaps Gigaom made a typo?
PS I have no clue where that picture came from but it could be the next Xperia based on form factor alone

Insidesprintnow (sounds like a bad porn website) claims to have the scoop on the Palm PRE’s FAQ, which may or may not be included with the phone in a print version. To firm things up they’ve included a screen shot of how to tune up your PRE if it seems a tad sluggish. So to reiterate, there’s no way to tell if the info is fabricated, but if so they’ve sure got some patience.
