Sprint’s 4G Service Hits Chicago

Sprint’s 4G (aka WiMax) service is now officially available in Chicago. This looks to be one of the first major metropolitan cities to offer the service. That means you can travel virtually anywhere in Chicago with your laptop an enjoy blazing fast download and upload speeds. Of course you’ll need to pick up the necessary USB dongle and pay for the service.

Of note, Boston, NYC and SF are due to receive the service in 2010.

Samsung Moment Now Available At Sprint

Sprint launched the Samsung Moment yesterday.  While it’s not the prettiest of phones it does offer the Android OS, a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, 3 megapixel camera, WiFi, 800mhz processor, Bluetooth, Sprint TV and GPS.  You can grab one now for $179.99 after a 2-year contract signing and $100 mail-in-rebate.

Motorola Droid Pre-Sale From Best Buy, Mail-in Rebate Not Needed

Looks like you can now pre-order the Motorola Droid at your local Best Buy for a cool $199.99 after 2 year Verizon contract, no mail-in rebate needed. You’ll then have to wait until November 6th, a whole excruciating week, before you can get your hands on one.

HTC Hero To Receive Android 2.0 Update

Good news all you HTC Hero owners with serious DROID/Google NAV envy: Android 2.0 will be coming to your phone…eventually. Straight from the horse’s mouth:

“Yes, we are working on an Eclair update for the HTC Hero. Because Eclair is a significantly enhanced release, it will require some time to update Sense for this new version of the Android OS. Please be patient while we work to provide you with a tightly integrated experience like the one you are already enjoying on your Hero.”

Google Maps Navigation Beta For Android 2.0 Announced

Looks like the mumblings were true as Google officially announced their Maps Navigation App. The new app features a 3D map, supports layers (e.g. Wikipedia), offers turn-by-turn voice guidance, and automatic rerouting.

As of now it’s only available on the Motorola Droid in beta form with no word if it’ll be made available on other platforms. But if Google releases this app to all phones, traditional GPS makers will have something to worry about, especially if they have to compete with the likes of the Google behemoth.

Google To Release Turn-By-Turn GPS App?

Rumors on the street is that Google will be releasing a free, ad-supported turn-by-turn GPS application. And yes, that was the collective trembling of Garmin, Tom Tom, and the rest of the traditional GPS makers as they shook in their boots. Assuming this is true, of course.

I always wondered why Google never released such an app that would be a natural extension of Google Maps. It just makes sense, right?

It’s official: the Palm Pixi will hit Sprint on November 15th and cost $99.99 after a 2-year and $100 mail-in-rebate.  That’s a pretty solid price considering it’s multitouch and includes a full QWERTY keyboard  Like the PRE, the Pixi is compatible with Palm’s wireless charging solution, the Touchstone, which is available for the added price of $79.99.
