As an update to yesterday’s report, Opera announced their supposedly game changing web experience through Opera Unite. So what’s all this hoopla about “reinventing the web”?
Basically, they’ve built a web browser with web server capabilities.
This means you can host applications such as a media jukebox or a file sharing app without the configuration hassles of a dedicated web server. Rather than going to a music streaming site such as Pandora you can hook directly up to a friend’s computer running Opera Unite to listen to their music. Or you can work on a shared Word document located on a buddy’s PC without using online services such as Google Apps.
What’s cool is that anyone can develop applications, a.k.a Opera Unite services, to run on this platform. So let’s say you develop a custom application that keeps track of your finances. Host it on Opera Unite and you can login remotely from your internet connected cell phone and see what your significant other is racking up.
