Samsung Blue Earth To Be Available In Sweden This Month

By Albert

samsung-blue-earth

Samsung announced their Blue Earth device, an eco-friendly smartphone powered by the sun. This fully touchscreen phone is expected to be available in Sweden by the end of this month, followed by France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal, and other European/Asian countries.

So one would expect a solar-powered smartphone to skimp on features, yes? Well, it sure doesn’t look like it based on these specs:

  • Quad-band GSM/HSDPA connectivity
  • 3.0 inch WQVGA capacitive touchscreen
  • 3.2 megapixel camera
  • MicroSD slot
  • Stereo FM radio
  • Bluetooth with A2DP

What sets Blue Earth apart from other phones is that the back panel is lined with solar cells that charge the phone in direct sunlight. Not only that, the device’s casing is made from recycled plastic, is packed with recycled paper, is able to go into an “eco-mode” power conservation mode, and is bundled with a 5 star energy efficient charger. Now that’s what I call green…err…Blue.

Samsung To Develop Linux-based Mobile OS

By Albert

linux-samsung

Samsung’s Dong-hoon chan, head of mobile device design, confirmed they will be developing their own mobile OS based on the open source Linux OS. Up until now they’ve been using the proprietary Touchwiz interface built on top of mobile OS’s such as Windows Mobile. Could be a smart move by Samsung since Linux has a large, almost fanatical user base that’ll be all too willing to develop cool apps/games…

Samsung Instinct HD Coming To A Best Buy Near You

By Christen da Costa

samsung-instinct-hd

While the details are a bit few and far between, we now know that Sprint will soon release an updated version of their Instinct S30, called the Instinct HD, thanks to a Best Buy flyer from over the weekend.  This news comes on the heels of a recently leaked shot of the Android based Instinct, the Instinct Q.  Unlike the Instinct Q, the Instinct HD lacks a full QWERTY keyboard and the Android OS, but makes up for it by including a 5 megapixel camera that can “record and play videos in HD through TV out connection”.  With that said, one would assume that the phone’s screen is capable of playing back HD content, but as mentioned the details are very few and far between.  There’s no word on release date, but Best Buy’s flyer indicates that it is ‘coming soon’.

Leak: Sprint’s Samsung InstinctQ Android Phone Gets The Picture Treatment

By Christen da Costa

samsung-instinctq

Sprint is scrapping to make a come back and if anything is gonna help them, aside from the Palm PRE, it’s the Android powered devices.  The InstinctQ - a spin off of the original Instinct that Sprint launched a many a months ago - is set to run the Android OS and include a full slideout QWERTY keyboard underneath its hood.  The joystick appears to be of the optical flavor, while the ‘home’ button and ‘back’ buttons are integrated into the phone’s touchscreen.  There’s no word on an official launch date but I’d guess in time for the holiday shopping season.
